The 2023–24 season is the 137th in the history of Manchester United, their 32nd season in the Premier League and their 49th consecutive season in the top flight of English football. The club are participating in the Premier League, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the UEFA Champions League. After being knocked out of the EFL Cup in the fourth round by their final opponents from the previous season, Newcastle United, they suffered their worst performance in the Champions League group stage, finishing in fourth place in their group with just four points. They managed to win the final of the FA Cup after overcoming rivals Liverpool after extra time in the quarter-finals and Coventry City on penalties in the semi-final, and finally cross-town rivals Manchester City 2–1, to win the FA Cup final. However, they finished in eighth place in the Premier League, their worst placed finish in the history of the competition, level on points with seventh-placed Newcastle but 24 goals behind on goal difference.[1]

It is the first season since 2010–11 without goalkeeper David de Gea and defender Phil Jones, who left the club when their contracts expired. With the departures of De Gea and Jones, United were initially without a Premier League winner in their squad for the first time since the competition's inaugural season in 1992–93, as well as without a player who played under Alex Ferguson for the first time since 1985;[2] however, the re-signing of Jonny Evans, who won three Premier League titles with the club between 2006 and 2015, meant that was no longer the case.[3]

Pre-season and friendlies[edit]

On 27 March 2023, United announced a tour of the United States, with friendly matches against Wrexham – who are co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and who also had former United goalkeeper Ben Foster in their squad – in San Diego,[4] and Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas.[5] On 12 May, the club announced their third and fourth pre-season friendlies in the US against fierce rivals Arsenal in New York City,[6] and in Houston against Real Madrid, which will be played one day after Wrexham game.[7] A fifth friendly, the first based in the UK, against Lyon in Edinburgh was also added to the pre-season calendar.[8] On 25 May, the club announced a friendly against Roses rivals and EFL Championship club Leeds United in Oslo.[9] A seventh match, against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin, was announced on 13 June.[10] On 29 June, the club announced a home friendly against French club Lens, to be played the day before the match against Athletic Bilbao.[11]

United won their first match of pre-season against Leeds 2–0, thanks to second-half goals from substitutes Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill,[12] while Donny van de Beek's goal against Lyon gave them their second win in Edinburgh.[13] In the first game of the United States tour, first-half goals from newly appointed captain Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho gave United a 2–0 win over Arsenal; they also won the post-match exhibition penalty shoot-out 5–3.[14] With their match against Real Madrid scheduled for Houston the next day, United fielded a team made up largely of under-21 players against Wrexham on 25 July. They went 2–0 down in the first half, though Marc Jurado pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time; however, Dan Gore was sent off early in the second half and a third Wrexham goal completed a 3–1 defeat for United.[15] They then suffered a second loss in as many days when goals from Jude Bellingham and Joselu gave Real Madrid a 2–0 win in Houston; newly signed goalkeeper André Onana made his debut in the game, playing the full 90 minutes.[16] Manchester United's tour of the United States ended with a 3–2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on 31 July. Diogo Dalot put United ahead in the 24th minute, but Donyell Malen scored twice in two minutes just before half-time to give Dortmund the lead. Antony levelled the scores before Youssoufa Moukoko secured the win for the Germans.[17]

The Reds returned to winning ways with a 3–1 comeback win over Lens at Old Trafford. Florian Sotoca put the visitors ahead after chipping Onana from the edge of the centre circle in the first half, before Marcus Rashford, Antony and Casemiro scored in the second period to turn the game around for United.[18] The following day, a second string United side drew 1–1 with Athletic Bilbao in Dublin. The La Liga team scored first through Nico Williams, but an added time equaliser from Facundo Pellistri meant that United ended their pre-season campaign with a draw.[19]

Premier League[edit]

The 2023–24 Premier League fixtures were released on 15 June 2023.[20]

August[edit]

The league season began with a home win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 14 August. After a scoreless first half, Raphaël Varane scored the game's only goal with a 76th-minute header. Named in the starting line-up, Mason Mount and André Onana made their debuts for United.[21] Five days later, United suffered an away defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Pape Matar Sarr opened the scoring for the home side in the 49th minute, and an own goal from Lisandro Martínez doubled their lead seven minutes from the end.[22] United then hosted Nottingham Forest the following weekend, coming into the match on a 30-game unbeaten run at home; however, that streak was put in jeopardy as United conceded two goals in the opening five minutes from Taiwo Awoniyi and Willy Boly. Christian Eriksen pulled one back in the first half, before Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes secured the comeback win with a goal each either side of a second-half red card for Forest's Joe Worrall.[23]

September[edit]

The month of September started with a loss away to Arsenal. Marcus Rashford struck first, but Martin Ødegaard levelled the score 35 seconds after restart of the game. In the second half, a VAR check saw an Arsenal penalty claim for a foul on Kai Havertz by Aaron Wan-Bissaka overturned and another check lead to an effort by Alejandro Garnacho being ruled out as offside. The Gunners then struck twice in injury time to win the match, first through Declan Rice and secondly, through Gabriel Jesus.[24] United then returned from the first international break of the season with a home match against Brighton & Hove Albion which they lost 3-1 with former United striker Danny Welbeck opening the scoring for the visitors, then right before the half-time interval Rasmus Højlund thought that he had equalised for United, however, the goal was disallowed by the VAR after Rashford was ruled to have taken the ball out of play. In the second-half, Pascal Groß doubled Brighton’s lead and João Pedro then scored a third for Brighton. However, Hannibal Mejbri did score a late consolation goal for United with his first professional goal. This result ended United’s 30-match unbeaten home run.[25] United then played Burnley at Turf Moor on 23 September 2023 which they won 1-0 with Fernandes scoring the only goal just before half-time.[26] In their final match in September United hosted Crystal Palace at Old Trafford losing 1-0 with Joachim Andersen scoring the sole goal in the 25th minute.[27]

October[edit]

October began with a win at home to Brentford by a score-line of 2-1. Mathias Jensen scored first for Brentford. However, Scott McTominay then scored two late goals to secure victory for United.[28] United then returned from the second international break of the season with an away match against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane which they won 2-1 with McTominay opening the scoring for United half-way through the first half, however, Oli McBurnie the equalised for Sheffield United four minutes later with a penalty kick following a handball by McTominay. Diogo Dalot then secured the win for United with just under 15 minutes left.[29] In their final match of October United hosted local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford losing 3-0 with Erling Haaland opening the scoring with a penalty kick for a foul on Rodri by Højlund and Haaland then doubled City’s lead just after half-time and Phil Foden then secured the victory for Pep Guardiola’s team with 10 minutes left to play. This result ended a run of three successive victories for United.[30]

November[edit]

The penultimate month of the year began with an away victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on 4 November with Fernandes scoring the only goal of the match in second-half stoppage time.[31] In their penultimate match of the month United hosted Luton Town at Old Trafford on Remembrance Day (11 November 2023) winning 1-0 with Victor Lindelöf scoring the sole goal with just over half an hour left.[32] In their final match of November United played Everton at Goodison Park on 26 November 2023 with Garnacho opening the scoring for United in the 3rd minute with an overhead kick which won both United’s Goal of the Month Award and the Premier League Goal of the Month Award. Rashford then doubled United’s lead in the 56th minute with a penalty kick awarded following a foul by former United player Ashley Young on Anthony Martial and Martial then scored himself with 15 minutes left to secure the victory.[33]

December[edit]

December began with an away loss to Newcastle United at St James’ Park by a score-line of 1-0 with Anthony Gordon scoring the only goal in the 55th minute.[34] United then hosted Chelsea at Old Trafford on 6 December winning 2-1 with McTominay scoring twice for United in between a goal for Chelsea from former Manchester City player Cole Palmer just before half-time.[35] In their next match United hosted Bournemouth at Old Trafford losing 3-0 with Dominic Solanke opening the scoring with just 5 minutes played, then Philip Billing doubled Bournemouth’s lead in the 68th minute and Marcos Senesi added a third for the visitors in the 73rd minute. This result put pressure on manager Erik ten Hag having beaten Chelsea in the previous match.[36] United then travelled to Anfield to play league leaders and North-West derby rivals Liverpool on 17 December drawing 0-0 with Dalot being sent-off in the 94th minute.[37] In their next match United travelled to the London Stadium to play West Ham United on 23 December losing 2-0 with Jarrod Bowen opening the scoring for West Ham in the 72nd minute and Mohammed Kudus then doubled West Ham’s lead in the 78th minute. The result put pressure on ten Hag again and 19-year-old Willy Kambwala made his Premier League debut replacing the ill Varane in the starting XI.[38] In their penultimate match of the month and the year United hosted Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 26 December winning 3-2 with John McGinn opening the scoring for Villa in the 21st minute and Leander Dendoncker then doubled Villa’s lead six minutes later. In the second-half, Garnacho then pulled a goal back for United in the 59th minute and he then equalised for United 71st minute and Højlund then scored the winner for United in the 82nd minute with his first league goal for the club. 19-year-old Dan Gore made his Premier League debut replacing Eriksen in the 94th minute.[39] In their final match of the month and of 2023 United travelled to the City Ground to play Nottingham Forest on 30 December losing 2-1 with Nicolás Domínguez opening the scoring for Forest in the 64th minute after a goalless first-half. However, Rashford then equalised for United in the 78th minute and Morgan Gibbs-White then scored the winner for Forest in the 82nd minute. This put increasing pressure on ten Hag going into the New Year and meant that Forest had beaten United for the first time in the Premier League since December 1994. This also ended a run of nine matches without a win for Forest against United.[40]

January[edit]

In their first match of the month and of 2024 United hosted Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on 14 January in their only league match of January due to the Premier League winter break. United drew 2-2 with Højlund opening the scoring for United in the 3rd minute, however Richarlison then equalised for Spurs in the 19th minute and Rashford then United ahead again in the 40th minute only for Rodrigo Bentancur to equalise for Spurs again in the 46th minute. Martínez made his return from injury during this match and this was only United’s second league draw of the season with the other one being the 0-0 draw with Liverpool in December.[41]

February[edit]

United won 4-3 with Rashford opening the scoring for United in the 5th minute, Højlund then doubled their lead in the 22nd minute. However, Pablo Sarabia then pulled a goal back for Wolves in the 71st minute with a penalty kick awarded for a foul on Max Kilman by Casemiro, McTominay then scored a third for United in the 75th minute and Kilman then scored a second for Wolves in the 85th minute and Pedro Neto then equalised for the hosts in the 95th minute. McTominay then scored the winner in the 87th minute to move United to within 5 points of Villa in 5th place.[44] In their penultimate match of the month, United travelled to Kenilworth Road to play Luton Town on 18 February. United won 2-1 with Højlund opening the scoring for United in the 1st minute and he then doubled United’s lead in the 7th minute. Carlton Morris scored a consolation goal for Luton in the 14th minute. The first goal made Højlund become the youngest player to score in six consecutive appearances at the age of 21 years and 14 days beating Joe Willock’s previous record of 21 years and 272 days old and the result gave United their fourth consecutive victory in the league.[45] In their final match of the month United played Fulham at Old Trafford on 24 February. 19-year-old Omari Forson made his senior United debut. United lost 2-1 with Calvin Bassey opened the scoring for Fulham in the 65th minute, Harry Maguire then equalised for United in the 89th minute and Alex Iwobi then scored the winner for Fulham in second-half stoppage time.[46]

This match also saw Garnacho start his 30th consecutive match for United.[50] In their next match United played North-West derby rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on 7 April in a repeat of the recent FA Cup quarter-final which United won 4-3 after extra time. This was Jürgen Klopp’s final match in charge of Liverpool against United. United drew 2-2 with Luis Díaz opening the scoring for the visitors in the 23rd minute and Fernandes then equalised for United with his 50th Premier League goal in the 50th minute following a mistake by Jarell Quansah and Mainoo then put United ahead 67th minute with his professional goal at Old Trafford. This result meant that Liverpool wouldn’t go top of the league table.[51] In their following match United travelled to the Vitality Stadium to play Bournemouth looking for revenge following their 3-0 home loss in December 2023. United drew 2-2 for the second successive match, with Solanke opening the scoring for Bournemouth in the 16th minute becoming the second Bournemouth player to score home and away against United in the season after Joshua King, Fernandes then equalised for United in the 31st minute and Justin Kluivert – son of former Ajax and Barcelona player Patrick Kluivert – then restored Bournemouth’s lead in the 36th minute. United drew 1-1 with Antony opening the scoring for United in the 79th minute and Zeki Amdouni then equalised for Burnley in the 87th minute with a penalty kick awarded for foul by Onana following a VAR check.[54]

May[edit]

Bruno Fernandes was awarded the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the 3rd season in the row with only David de Gea winning it more with 4 wins between 2013 and 2018.[55][56]

In their first match of the final month of the season United travelled to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace on 6 May where they lost 4-0 with Michael Olise opening the scoring for Palace in the 12th minute, with Jean-Philippe Mateta then doubling the hosts’ lead in the 40th minute, Tyrick Mitchell then added a third for Palace in the 58th minute and Olise then rounded of the scoring for the hosts in the 66th minute with his second goal of the match. This result gave United their 13th loss of the season the most in any Premier League season. Since the start of the previous season, only Nottingham Forest (five) have lost more Premier League away games by a four-goal margin or higher than United (three). The Selhurst Park heavy defeat was United’s heaviest of the season. United have conceded 81 goals in all competitions this season, their most in a campaign since 1976-77 (also 81). They have not finished a season on a minus goal difference since 1989-90 in Division One. They are currently on -3 and United’s expected goals for the Palace match was 0.35 – their second worst of the season. They have taken 10 points from the past 11 Premier League games and have conceded late goals against Fulham, Brentford, Chelsea, Liverpool and Burnley, which costed them 10 points.[57] In the their penultimate home match of the season United played arch-rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford on 12 May looking to derail Arsenal’s title hopes with a win with Diallo marking his first start in all competitions. Arsenal won 1-0 with Leandro Trossard opening the scoring for Arsenal in the 20th minute. This result gave United back-to-back losses following their 4-0 humiliation against Crystal Palace in their previous match.[58] In their final home match of the season United played Newcastle United at Old Trafford on 15 May. United won 3-2 with Mainoo opening the scoring for United in the 31st minute, however, Gordon then equalised for Newcastle in the 49th minute. Amad Diallo then restored United’s lead in the 57th minute with his first Premier League goal and Højlund then added a third for United in the 84th minute. Lewis Hall then pulled a goal back for Newcastle in the 92nd minute with his first league goal but United hung on to seal a win in their final home match of the season.[59] In their final away match and fixture of the season United travelled to the AMEX Stadium to play Brighton & Hove Albion on 19 May in Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi’s final match in charge of the home side with Newcastle winning 4-2 against Brentford it meant that United would finish 8th and with a -1 goal difference. They would need to beat derby rivals Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final to qualify for any form of UEFA European competition next season as it meant that they wouldn’t qualify via their league position. United won 2-0 with Dalot opening the scoring in the 73rd minute and Højlund then scored a second for United in the 88th minute. This meant that that finished the 2023-24 Premier League season with a win.[60]

As a Premier League side, United entered the 2023–24 FA Cup in the third round and were drawn away to Wigan Athletic,[62] with the match to be played on 8 January 2024.[63] United won 2–0 thanks to a long-range strike from Diogo Dalot in the first half, followed by a Bruno Fernandes penalty. They were then drawn against either Newport County or Eastleigh in the fourth round.[64][65] Newport were confirmed as their opponents when they beat Eastleigh 3–1 in a replay on 16 January 2024.[66] On 28 January, United won at Rodney Parade 4–2 courtesy of goals from Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Antony and Rasmus Højlund.[67] On the same day, Bristol City or Nottingham Forest were drawn as their next opponents, with the match taking place on 28 February.[68] On 7 February, Nottingham Forest were confirmed as United's next opponents thanks to their 5–3 win on penalties.[69] United won at City Ground 1–0 thanks to a late effort from Casemiro.[70]

With Liverpool's 3–0 win over Southampton in the fifth round, United were drawn against their rivals in the quarter-finals.[71] The tie was played on 17 March. United took an early lead thanks to Scott McTominay, but going into half time, goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah saw Liverpool take a 2–1 lead. Antony scored a late equaliser to take the match into extra time, although Rashford missed the chance to score an injury-time winner. Near the end of the first half of extra time, Harvey Elliott gave Liverpool the lead, but in the second half, Rashford equalised to make the score 3–3. In injury time, Amad Diallo scored the winning goal, and was sent off for taking his shirt off in the celebrations as he was given a yellow card prior to scoring.[72]

United were drawn against Coventry City in the semi-finals. They faced each other at Wembley Stadium on 21 April, with United winning 4-2 on penalties after giving up a 3–0 lead in the second thanks to Coventry striker Haji Wright's equalizer in stoppage time of the second half.

United faced Manchester City for a second consecutive Manchester Derby FA Cup Final. Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring following a miscommunication between Joško Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega. Following a disallowed Marcus Rashford goal, Kobbie Mainoo quickly scored United’s second. Jerémy Doku got one back for City late on but it wasn’t enough as United picked up their 13th FA Cup trophy and qualify for the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League.[73]

EFL Cup[edit]

As United are competing in UEFA competition in 2023–24 as the reigning champions of the competition, they entered the 2023–24 EFL Cup in the third round in September. They were drawn at home to Crystal Palace.[74] They beat Palace 3–0 thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial.[75] In the fourth round, they were given another home draw against Newcastle United, in a repeat of the 2023 EFL Cup final.[76] This time they lost 3–0, with goals from Miguel Almirón and Lewis Hall in the first half and a third from Joe Willock in the second.

UEFA Champions League[edit]

Group stage[edit]

Having finished third in the 2022–23 Premier League, United qualified for the 2023–24 UEFA Champions League. They entered the competition in the group stage, which was drawn on 31 August 2023, with United in pot 2 along with Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Atlético Madrid, RB Leipzig, Porto and Arsenal.[77] United were drawn into Group A along with Bayern Munich, Copenhagen and Galatasaray.[78]

United began their group stage campaign with an away loss to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena losing 4-3 with Leroy Sané opening the scoring for Bayern and Serge Gnabry then doubled their lead 4 minutes later. Rasmus Højlund then pulled a goal back for United just after half-time, however, Harry Kane then scored a penalty kick to restore Bayern’s two goal advantage. Casemiro then scored for United with 2 minutes left of normal time but Mathys Tel then scored a fourth for the hosts two minutes later. Casemiro did score another goal for United in the 95th minute but it wasn’t enough to prevent an opening day defeat.[79]

In their second group match United played Galatasaray at Old Trafford losing 3-2 with Højlund opening the scoring for United in the 17th minute but former United player Wilfried Zaha then equalised for Galatasaray in the 23rd minute. Højlund then put United ahead again in the 67th minute but Kerem Aktürkoğlu then equalised again for the visitors in the 71st minute and Casemiro was sent-off in the 77th minute and Mauro Icardi then scored the winner for Galatasaray in the 81st minute. This result meant United had lost both of their opening two group stage matches leaving them bottom of their group.[80]

In their third group match United played Copenhagen at Old Trafford winning 1-0 with Harry Maguire scoring the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute. This result secured United’s first win of this season’s Champions League and moved them off the bottom of the group.[81]

In their fourth group match United played Copenhagen at the Parken Stadium losing 4-3. Højlund opened the scoring for United in the 3rd minute and doubled United’s lead in the 28th minute. However, Marcus Rashford was sent-off in the 42nd minute, Mohamed Elyounoussi then pulled a goal back for Copenhagen in the 45th minute and Diogo Gonçalves then scored a penalty kick in first-half stoppage time to add a second for the hosts. Bruno Fernandes then scored a penalty kick for United in the 68th minute and Lukas Lerager then scored a third for Copenhagen in the 83rd minute to equalise the match and Roony Bardghji then won the match for the hosts in the 87th minute. This result moved United back to the bottom of the group.[82]

In their penultimate group match United played Galatasaray at Rams Park drawing 3-3 with Alejandro Garnacho opening the scoring for United in the 11th minute and Fernandes then doubled United’s lead 7 minutes later. Chelsea loanee Hakim Ziyech then pulled a goal back for Galatasaray in the 29th minute. Scott McTominay then scored a third for the visitors in the 55th minute, however, Ziyech then scored a second for the hosts in the 29th minute and Aktürkoğlu then equalised for Galatasaray in the 71st minute. This result kept United at the bottom of the group and needing a win in their final group match to stay in European competition this season.[83]

In their final group United played Bayern Munich at Old Trafford needing to win and for the other match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray to end in a draw to stay in either the Champions League or the UEFA Europa League. However, United would lose 1-0 and the other match ended in a 1-0 win for Copenhagen with Kingsley Coman scoring the only goal for Bayern in the 71st minute. These results meant that United finished bottom of the group on only 4 points (3 for the 1-0 home win over Copenhagen and 1 for the 3-3 draw over Galatasaray) and would therefore be eliminated from all UEFA competitions for this season. This put pressure on manager Erik ten Hag having lost 3-0 in the prior match to Bournemouth and with an upcoming match against North-west derby rivals Liverpool.[84]
